Development[edit]
After the huge success of Kaththi, AR. Murugadoss announced a project with Mahesh Babu. However, Mahesh Babu was busy in project Brahmotsavam. Hence, Murugadoss directed the Bollywood film Akira, with lead Sonakshi Sinha, an official remake of Tamil film Mouna Guru (2011).
After finishing Brahmotsavam, Mahesh Babu joined hands with AR. Murugadoss in 2016. AR. Murugadoss discussed the script with several producers, because it's the most expensive film in Telugu after Baahubali. The film is being produced by NVR Cinema and Reliance Entertainment.[citation needed]
Casting[edit]
S. J. Surya was selected as antagonist for Mahesh Babu. S. J. Surya, who directed Naani with Mahesh Babu as the lead actor, marks his second collaboration. AR. Murugadoss was a former assistant of S. J. Surya in the film Vaali and Kushi. The director discussed with Bollywood actress for Mahesh Babu like Sonakshi Sinha, Shraddha Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and finally Parineeti Chopra was accepted for project and which would be her Telugu debut, but later on Parineeti Chopra was replaced by Rakul Preet Singh citing date problem. Tamil actor Bharath is signed to play a negative role.[6]
